What Are Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)?
A smart, affordable upgrade that gives you control over every room in your house.
How Do TRVs Work?
TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) are the dial controls found on the side of most modern radiators. They have a built-in sensor that monitors the air temperature in the room.
When the room gets warm enough, the valve automatically closes to stop hot water flowing into that radiator. When it cools down, it opens again.
This means your boiler isn't wasting energy heating rooms that are already warm.
Lower Bills
Stop wasting heat in empty rooms.
Better Comfort
Keep bedrooms cool and living rooms cosy.
Easy Control
Just twist the dial to set the temperature.
Where Should I Fit TRVs?
You should fit them on almost every radiator in your home to get maximum control. They work best in:
- Bedrooms (Keep them cooler for sleep)
- Living Rooms (Set for comfort)
- Kitchens (Often get hot from cooking)
- Guest Rooms (Keep low when unused)
- Home Offices
- Hallways
⚠️ Important Rule: Do NOT install a TRV in the same room as your main wall thermostat (usually the hall or landing). This can confuse the boiler and cause the heating to cycle on and off constantly.
Manual vs Smart TRVs
You have two main options when upgrading your valves:
Standard Manual TRVs
The classic white dial with numbers 1-5.
- Low cost to install
- Reliable and simple
- No batteries required
- Set it and forget it
Smart TRVs (Hive/Tado)
Digital heads that connect to your phone.
- Control each room from app
- Set schedules for every room
- Boost heat without moving
- Works with Alexa/Google
